The Manhattan Psychiatrist Is Licensed By The State

By Marissa Velazquez

A qualified manhattan psychiatrist is educated and experienced with extensive time spent preparing to treat mental illnesses. Sometimes there is confusion over the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist. The psychiatrist is a licensed medical doctor and the psychologist has a PhD. The psychologist cannot write prescriptions.

A person requiring prescription medication is first diagnosed. A psychiatrist can provide counseling as well. Often, a psychiatrist and psychologist both treat a patient, with the psychologist providing the counseling. Medical tests are administered by the psychiatrist when they are considered necessary.

A physical condition can cause a mental health disorder. For example, a brain tumor or disease or illegal drug use may be to blame. One of the most serious symptoms of mental illness is psychosis. This exists when an individual is out of touch with reality.

To prepare for a career in psychiatry, a four year medical degree must be earned. After that, there is a psychiatric residency done in a hospital. Two months in neurology are required, along with time in internal medicine practice and pediatric practice. These months may be referred to as the internship.

From the date of high school graduation, it takes at least twelve years to qualify to practice psychiatry. If the candidate wants to prepare for a subspecialty, that will add a two year long fellowship to the process. Then an exam is taken for medical licensing. If desired, the individual can apply for board certification, which is optional.

There is a state license that must be obtained prior to practicing psychiatry. In addition, they must obtain a federal narcotics license to enable them to prescribe medication. Plus, they have to be registered with the Drug Enforcement Administration.

The state of being psychotic is symptomatic of a mental illness, much as the sneeze is symptomatic of the common cold. It is not, however, an illness in and of itself. Psychosis can be caused by a physical condition, a brain tumor, for example. It can also be brought about by a death in the family or other disaster in the life of someone who is not mentally ill.

An individual who is psychotic may hear voices or see things that do not exist. Some criminal behavior is the result of imaginary voices telling an afflicted person to do something illegal. Schizophrenia is a mental illness that is accompanied by psychosis. The individual is disorganized and may claim to be a famous person.

There is a tool that quickly identifies and evaluates the severity of psychosis. It is a rating scale that can be quickly administered and scored. It is informative on eighteen different aspects of psychosis. Blood tests and brain scans may be done if a physical cause is suspected.

Controlling the odd symptoms and deciding between hospitalization and outpatient care is most urgent. If any suicidal ideation is present, the patient likely needs inpatient care. Psychotropic drugs may help control symptoms.

Twelve or more years of preparation enables the manhattan psychiatrist to evaluate the severity of a condition. He or she makes emergency decisions on whether to hospitalize or treat the patient outside of the hospital setting. In many instances, care will include medication and counseling. The counseling, or talk therapy, may be administered by a psychologist who works in conjunction with the psychiatrist. This often provides the best results.
