Herbal Neck Wrap Stress Therapy

By Linda Ruiz

There are many aspects of life that can cause a person to feel strained, stressed or fatigued. Such feelings can cause the mind to become unsettled, muscles may throb and the body may ache and be completely zapped of energy. A great natural treatment for these types of maladies is an herbal neck wrap, which can serve many holistic purposes.

These products are made with natural substances and may be reused hundreds of times for several years. They are flexible and can be worn in multiple ways to relieve pain and tension or to promote relaxation and assist in the battle against insomnia. Although they are available in unscented formats, many people find the scented versions to have added benefits.

Normally found in roughly 2' lengths, about 6" widths, the wraps usually weigh just over two and a half pounds. The three primary formats in which these product are made are as a pillow like rectangle, a loosely filled tube or as a horseshoe pillow that cradles one's head. However they are sewn, their flexibility provides ample coverage and permits them to be placed practically anywhere on the body they may be needed.

A huge part of this product's success as a treatment is the combination of materials that constitute its insides. The airy fabric casings are filled loosely with a mixture of natural substances like flax, grape seed, corn, various grains or buckwheat hulls. These types of plant matter are able to absorb temperatures, either hot or cold, and hold them for a slow release.

That temperature absorbing ability is one of the main benefits of this type of filling as they may serve as either cold or heat therapy. Microwaving the item for a minute or two turns it into a cordless heating pad, and a few hours in the freezer generates an ice pack that contains no water and remains ever flexible. Whether hot or cold, the inner materials can effectively comfort sore muscles, ease pains and soothe a variety of aches.

To this mix of temperature absorbing materials, a variety of fragrant plants and herbs are added. This allows for soft, calming scents to be released each time the tube is kneaded, or as it cools after being heated. As the temperature seeps into the muscles to relieve pain or tightness, the soothing aromas serve to calm the mind and help the wearer relax.

Aromatherapy means using particular scents to influence the way a person feels and to soothe the brain into relaxation. Materials like lilac, sage, lavender, rosemary, jasmine and honeysuckle are primarily used in these products because their smells are said to affect one's mood and ability to relax. This aspect is what make the product useful for treating insomnia, headaches and migraines.

Products with substances like eucalyptus, pine, spruce and mint added to the filler make effective treatments for colds and sinus issues during the winter months. Regardless of their scent, these therapeutic wraps are great for easing muscle pains in the shoulders, legs and arms, as well as easing joint soreness. They also promote relaxation, alleviate insomnia and are a soothing therapy for headaches and migraines.
