Discovering PRP Therapy Portland, Oregon

By Jason Anderson

Recently, due to the opioid crisis, a number of orthopedic specialists and pain managers have been turning to different types of injections for pain. While some merely numb the pain for several weeks up to a year, others work to heal a condition such as Osteoarthritis, such is the case with prp therapy portland.

To date, PRP injections have been studied with regards to use in plastic surgery, oral surgery, osteoarthritis and chronic tendinitis. In most cases, the most positive results were with regards to use in the knees for osteoarthritis. After a few random controls in 2009, health care providers discovered the efficacy and safety of the treatments.

When it comes to PRP and sinus based surgeries, the process showed no results during a study in 2009. Whereas, a 2014 Cochrane report has provided that PRP has shown no success with regards musculoskeletal injuries or issues. For, participants in both of these studies found little to no relief with regards to pain or correction in mobility.

Originally having been thought to also be able to assist in bone healing, only one of out of four studies showed this to be the case. Whereas, proponents as early as 2004, began arguments that the negative study and trial results were due to poor and inadequate PRP samples from clients. As such, the therapy remains controversial while readily available at many clinics and hospitals.

PRP is also being used in the gynecological field as a number of gynecologists are now injecting PRP into vaginas. For, many believe the therapy will aid in providing better and more frequent orgasms. While this is the case, others in the field suggest the practice is dangerous and can be extremely risky for women at risk of various blood cancers.

While most studies have shown a lack of benefits, there have been no adverse side of effects related to the therapy. Although, it has been suggested that this lack of evidence is based on the inconsistency of use in methodology and a lack of documentation with regards to other studies and trials. For example, while some women are having PRP injected into the vagina, there is no proof that there have been any trials regarding women's health and PRP.

Depending on the potential use, there are four different methods in which blood platelets are prepped for platelet-rich plasma injections. In most cases, the efficacy of growth factors when it comes to healing a number of injuries and the concentration of such factors found within PRP are the primary basis for use in tissue repair. Whereas, platelets collected during this type of therapy are activated by calcium chloride and thrombin which induce factors from alpha granules.

PRP is prepared by removing blood from a potential client, then running it through a two step centrifuge process designed to split the platelet-rich plasma from the red blood cells. In most cases, this is done at a clinic which offers the treatment by using commercially available equipment and pre-packaged kits. While this is the case, the resulting substance can vary from individual to individual and clinic to clinic, thus making it more difficult to understand the exact efficacy and safety of the treatment.
