The Sophrology Method Coaching And Professor Caycedo

By Mark Jones

The self-help field has exploded over the last several decades in the United States and Europe. One of the lesser known self-help ideologies can be found in sophrology method coaching. In this practice, individuals practice remaining in a state of peace and harmony on an ongoing basis.

The practice combines Western science and Eastern wisdom to create balance and harmony in life. In doing so, coaches work with clients how to use the practice to manage and reduce stress, explore concepts of mindful living and sleep better. For, the practice uses the body mind connection to balance oneself and the world at large. One of the most common comparisons to Sophrology is that of meditation though the two practices are distinctly different.

When it comes to the term Sophrology, it is defined as being the study of consciousness in harmony. The roots of the ancient Greek term are SOS meaning harmony and Phren meaning mind. As such, it is believed that if an individual can remain in a consciously harmonious state, the harmony will transfer to others and the world.

The practice, developed by a Columbian neuro-scientist and professor in the 1960s to coach clients on how to become more serene and peaceful has been extremely successful in Europe. In response, a number of new practitioners have now become interested in Sophrology. In fact, a number of psychiatric institutions such as hospitals and clinics have incorporated the practice into ongoing treatment plans

The professor suggested as early as 1970 at a conference that the method was birthed out of the conscious mind. While this is the case, the psychiatrist also suggested that the practice is a philosophy, a way of life, a therapy and a tool for personal development. Whereas, the basic concept behind the practice is to teach people how to live in a harmonious rather than a traumatic or depressed state of mind.

When Professor Caycedo originally set out to discover ways of healing, Western medicine was at the forefront of studies. While this is the case, hopes were that people could be treated without the need for psychiatric treatments or drugs. After which, Caycedo began looking into relaxation techniques, phenomenology and other Western practices.

Out of all the practices reviewed by Caycedo, the professor kept the aspect of relaxation techniques and the mental method to incur mental peace. Together, individuals began to relax by learning how to relax by imagining and visualizing a calm and peaceful environment. After which, the psychiatrist created the word Sophrology and opened the first Department of Sophrology in 1960 at the Santa Isabel Hospital in Madrid, Spain.

While having been popular in Europe since inception in the 1970s, the practice is still rarely used in other areas of the world. While this is the case, it appears that the practice could very well be beneficial to people around the world. As such, those whom are familiar with the practice are now hoping to teach others so the practice can spread throughout the world.
