Liver Detox Tips: Which Herbal Treatments Are Best To Keep Your Skin Healthy

By Kim Moser

Psoriasis can come and go and the longer you have had it, the longer it may take to clear up so you need to have some patience with herbal treatments. Outbreaks of psoriasis can be triggered by trauma, emotional stress and infection. Often immune system problems can also impact on psoriasis. One of the ways to clear up psoriasis is by helping liver function. When the liver is not operating properly, your blood can be full of toxins and this can show on the skin as psoriasis.

Most herbal treatments for psoriasis should contain Cleavers to help with lymphatic circulation and stimulation of kidney function. Yellow Dock is a great herb for skin conditions and is also a liver stimulant. Liquorice is a good anti-inflammatory herb and Bupleurum aids liver detoxification and immune system correction.

Psoriasis is the result of over-active skin cell replication and is characterised by scaly patches that are often a silvery colour. Itching and bleeding often occur as skin cells grow faster than they can be shed. To soothe the skin, applying a cream of Calendula, St Johns Wort and essential oil of Tea Tree and Lavender twice daily will help. Although this will relieve symptoms, balancing the body is the best way to get long lasting results.

There are two main phases of detoxification in the liver. The first phase converts toxic chemicals into less harmful ones but during this process free radicals are released. Too many free radicals can, in turn, damage liver cells. When liver cells are damaged enough by free radicals, they can break open and release their enzymes into the blood showing abnormal liver enzyme readings that indicate significant tissue damage. A Detoxifying herbal remedy has herbs high in antioxidants to slow down or eliminate this buildup of free radicals. Remember, the liver is one of the most amazing organs in your body; it is also one of the largest. Because the liver's primary function is to clean the blood of toxins, it is understandable that in recent times, this organ has come under considerably more stress.

The second detoxification pathway in the liver is known as the conjugation pathway. Through this process the liver joins specific substances along with toxic chemicals such as drugs or hormones and eliminates them via the bowel or the kidneys. This conjugation can break down when the processes of elimination are impaired. Sulfur-containing amino acids such as taurine and cysteine are important in the second part of liver detoxification.

Biological sulphur will help to provide the sulphur needed to catabolise the amino acids and help the liver to detoxify the blood. To help you through phase two of detoxification of the liver, Glycine, glutamine, choline and inositol are also required along with Phytoplex in conjunction with herbal treatment.

A common detoxification herb is Dandelion to assist with liver detoxification. St Mary's Thistle is another liver detoxification herb while Cleavers assists to stimulate kidney and skin detoxification. Shizandra has strong antioxidant properties and enhances both phases of liver detoxification. Tumeric is high in antioxidants and is an anti-inflammatory herb. Globe Artichoke has a cholesterol reducing capacity and assists with liver detoxification while Gentian stimulates accelerates elimination.

  1. Set a goal of say one week and take away at least one item of your daily diet that you know isn't good for you. If you do it a week at a time, the task doesn't seem so daunting. Take French fries, for example - instead of ordering them substitute something that's healthier - a salad could be the ideal choice. detox
