Quick Reference Tarot Card Meanings

By Robert McDonald

Most people have been intrigued, at one time or another, with the occult. Some are true believers and others skeptics. Still others fall somewhere in between. Most of us have seen the hand up, palm-side out sign in the window of an old house indicating a palm reader. You have probably also seen signs with an exotically clad woman peering into a crystal ball advertising the services of a fortune teller. Advertising Tarot card readings seem to be more unusual, but are no less interesting.

Most people like to believe that the reading of cards is an ancient art, one that goes back to ancient Egypt. This may or may not be true. It probably depends on what you read and who you think is credible. The cards may have a much more recent history than many card readers will lead you to believe. That being said, the cards seem to come in many versions and can be read in just as many different ways.

The Fool is an interesting card. It depicts a youthful individual who seems to have the whole world in front of him. Most readers will you tell that he represents freedom from care and day to day responsibility. He comes and goes as he pleases and never seems to make plans for the future.

The card called the Empress is an earth mother type of personality. She is creative and loves nature. Abundance seems to surround her as she takes everything in stride. The Empress is a confident, calm female entity who seems to believe that there are solutions to any problem that arises if you just relax and let things work themselves out.

Another card that is generally positive is the Emperor. This individual has strong opinions and a strong personality to match them. He is not opposed to going his own way and making unpopular decisions if he feels justified. His confidence and sense of power make him a formidable adversary, but he is not one to shy away from controversy and can be a strong ally.

The Hermit, not so surprisingly, symbolizes solitude, introspection, and even wisdom. The drawing on the card shows an old man with a long beard, cloak and cane holding up a lighted lantern. He apparently retreats from the outside world in order to contemplate the meaning of his life and the lives of others.

The Lovers is probably the card in the deck that most interests anyone who believes in a serious reading. Not surprisingly again, this is the representation of sexual desire, unity, and intimate relationships. Some fortune tellers will let you know however, that this does not necessarily represent a union between two people. It can have other meanings.

Having your future predicted according to the distribution of cards can be a lot of fun and a great way to pass some time on a lazy afternoon. If you are interested in more information, the internet is packed with people who claim to know what you are thinking and what is going to happen to you.
