Long Island Sciatica Issues Helped With Chiropractic Therapy

By Griselda Zerna Albao

Pain caused by injury or overuse of soft body tissue is very common. The body includes a network of tissues. Fascia, nerves, ligaments, tendons and muscles are all soft tissues. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body and often subject to compression from surrounding tissue. Long Island Active Release Technique is a patented therapy used by chiropractors to effectively relieve pain from sciatica and other soft tissue damage.

P. Michael Leahy, DC, through his years of chiropractic practice discovered a manual method of locating the exact point in the body that is the source of pain. Dr. Leahy used manual examination to actually feel the tightness and tension of the soft tissue of his patients. The symptoms that his patients were complaining of were a result of changes in that tissue from overuse or injury.

Eventually, he patented the series of movements as ART, Active Release Technique. So that more patients can experience needed relief from this type of tissue damage, Dr. Leahy developed a series of courses to teach the technique to other chiropractors. After taking the training, students are tested and only certified when they are able to pass all the courses.

The body is a three dimensional complex system of skeletal, vascular and soft tissues. In the case of a muscle tear injury there can be a small gap or tear in the muscle tissue. Over time, scar tissue will develop to fill that gap. If there is other soft tissue in close proximity to the injured muscle, the scar tissue can spread and exacerbate the injury. If the scar tissue is near the sciatic nerve, it can impinge or compress that nerve with each movement.

Chiropractors trained and certified in ART can locate the soft tissue that is the source of pain for the patient. As his skilled hands move over the body, your chiropractor is able to feel the changes in soft tissue. Once those affected areas are identified, he will use the appropriate ART massage movements to alleviate tension and eliminate pain.

Chiropractic care combined with ART has been used to effectively provide desired relief for many patients who were suffering from this type of tissue injury or damage. There is no need to endure pain from sciatica any longer. See your ART trained chiropractor to get the relief you deserve.
