There are still many millions that use tobacco products and that are addicted to nicotine. They not only damage their own health but also the health of those in the vicinity when the light up. Health experts agree that nicotine is extremely addictive and in a concentrated form it is a deadly poison. Despite this, all those millions of people still puff away. By taking steps to stop smoking Colorado Springs smokers will lengthen their lives and save substantial sums every year.

Many people from two or more generations ago started smoking because it was seen as a sophisticated habit. Film stars all smoked, even on screen. Cigarette adverts portrayed the habit as a glamorous one, practised by beautiful people. In those days there were no restrictions regarding where people may smoke. They smoke wherever they wished, even in restaurants. Those that hated being exposed to the smoke had no recourse at all.

After years of intense efforts by anti smoke pressure groups governments finally acted. In many countries it is now illegal to smoke in public places, to advertise tobacco products or even for tobacco companies to sponsor public events. Taxes on tobacco products have risen sharply and massive public education programs about the grave dangers facing smokers have been launched. These efforts have indeed led to a marked decline in the number of smokers.

There is overwhelming scientific evidence that tobacco products contain lethal substances. Nicotine is not just very addictive, but it is also a deadly poison. Cigarettes also contain many other harmful chemicals and tar. Smokers risk heart disease, many lung ailments, cancer and a host of other medical problems. Those non smokers around a smoker is at much risk as the smoker himself.

Many smokers admit that they are fully aware of the fact that their habit is unsocial, unhealthy to themselves and those around them and that they spend sizeable amounts on their habit. They claim that they simply cannot quit. Yet many thousands have done so successfully, even though addiction experts agree that nicotine is one of the most addictive substances known to mankind.

There is no shortage of help for those that want to quit. There are many over the counter products, such as chewing gum and patches that are designed to reduce the urge to light up a cigarette. Many organizations offer special programs to help smokers. There are even substitutes and electronic cigarettes have become very popular because they still offer the illusion of dragging on a cigarette.

Addiction experts agree that no addict, including nicotine addicts, can be forced to undergo treatment or accept help. They first have to admit the fact that they have a problem and that they need help to overcome that problem. This is a very important step and once a smoker reaches that point, his loved ones should provide as much support as they can muster.

Smoking is not glamorous. It causes early ageing, it numbs the taste buds and smokers cannot smell as well as non smokers. The habit is extremely dangerous to the health of the smoker and those around him. Quitting is not always easy, but the human mind can overcome amazing obstacles.
